
The defence allocation for Malaysia in 2022 is MYR 16.14 billion, which is an increase from the previous year’s budget of MYR 15.86 billion. This figure is further broken down to operating and development expenditures that is estimated around MYR 11.10 billion and MYR 5.04 billion respectively. From the operating expenditure, a large chunk will go to salaries (71%) while the balance (29%) will be used for various supplies and services.
On the development end, around MYR 497 million in expenses is budgeted for supplies and services while MYR 4.58 billion has been set aside for procuring new assets. 34% of this total will go to the Army for general infrastructure upgrades and vehicles, while 23% for the Navy will be used for the purpose of buying newer weapons platforms and general vehicles. It is anticipated that the Air Force, which gets the balance 34%, will use their allocation to attain newer communications equipment and improve the abilities of their special forces personnel.
